Abstract
In both North and South, the role of international migrants in the development of their home country has become a central topic of debate. Discussion has focused on the way in which transfers of goods and money affect the economies of the countries of origin, and the living conditions of sending communities and households. Using data from a survey on international migration conducted among 1,141 Dakarian households in 2008, David LESSAULT, Cris BEAUCHEMIN and Papa SAKHO measure the role of migrant remittances in the urban renewal that has taken place in Dakar despite the ongoing economic crisis and the withdrawal of the state from the housing sector. Their findings are mixed: Senegalese migrant remittances help to cover the routine expenses of their households of origin (bills, rent) and this is certainly a useful contribution, but migrants do not appear to play a key role - directly at least - in financing the purchase or renovation of property in the capital. © I.N.E.D.
