Abstract

This paper draws on a study of in-migrants in two places in northernmost Norway; Vadsø and Havøysund. In 2005, five months of fieldwork was done, and 25 women and 25 men from 31 in-migrant households were interviewed on why they chose to move to Finnmark, and how they live and perceive their (new) everyday life. An important dimension of the in-migrants' narratives concerns different forms of mobility such as travelling and the use of new communication technology. Inspired by theorists such as Ottar Brox, Karen Fog Olwig and Doreen Massey, this paper analyses such mobile practices within a relational and dynamic place perspective. The paper indicates that mobilities are strengthening place attachment in the north among our informants. Hence, the paper argues that in order to understand the effects of global processes, such as mobilities, they should be analysed as embedded in specific local, cultural and social contexts and among specific social actors. © 2011 Universitetsforlaget.
