Abstract
Group Psychotherapy with Traumatised Refugees Before leaving their home country, many refugees experienced traumata such as captivity, torture, rape, or murder. In exile they suffer from the insecure psychosocial situation. Accordingly, prevalence of specific post-traumatic symptoms and other mental disorders is increased in the refugee population. Western Public Health services are over-burdened with the number of refugees looking for therapeutic support. Because of this high demand, group therapy may be an applicable therapeutic approach to suit the deficit. Additionally, groups offer the opportunity to get in touch for isolated patients, and the group context is particularly suitable and important for strengthening interpersonal competences. The relevant concepts of group psychotherapy for traumatized refugees in terms of their effectiveness are reported and discussed. A self-developed concept for the treatment of traumatized refugees is introduced. © Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co. KG, Göttingen 2011.
