Abstract
In this article, I examine differences in the extent of ethnic inequalities in vocational education and training, based on pooled data of the German Socio-economic Panel (GSOEP). It is analyzed to see if the distribution of individual and family capital is the only cause for differences in educational success, as one would expect in a meritocratic organized education system. It is argued that there is a need to take the diversity of individuals with migration background into account. Therefore, data distinguishes three different groups (individuals with Turkish or other "guest worker" background, and those with miscellaneous backgrounds). Furthermore, three different types of migrant generations are created: Individuals born in Germany (2nd Generation), individuals with real experience of migration (1st Generation), and those who migrated before the age of 6 and therefore underwent an important part of socialization in Germany (1.5th Generation). The results confirm that Turkish migrants take on a special position. The article closes by stressing the need of a more differentiated look on integration processes.
