Abstract

The supremacy of neoliberal policies all over the world has changed the way that development agendas are being set in developing countries. The effect of this has been the disappearance of Third World industrialization from governments' policy agendas as well as academic discussions. The term 'newly industrializing countries' is being replaced by wording such as 'emerging market economies' and 'industrialization by growth and competition'. However, industrial production still holds an important place in ordinary people's lives since millions of men and women are engaged in commodity production mostly destined for western market economies. © 2011 Taylor & Francis.
