Abstract

The stories told by refugees may be studied in the same light as that used to examine those told by analysands as the two are similar in many ways. Both are accounts of suffering addressed to others, both are listened to, questioned and interpreted. They are a means of expressing one's personal history as a part of History, somewhere between memory and resistance, reality and fantasy and such stories create a place of total freedom, in which the bonds between self and other may be rebuilt.
