Undocumented migrants and maternity care (Article)

Abstract

At present undocumented migrants in the UK who fall pregnant must, by law, be charged for all maternity care. This article outlines how this legislation works in practice: what charges are made, how debts are managed and how much money is recovered. It explores how this policy may impact on the health-seeking behaviour of pregnant undocumented migrants, looked at in the context of the Confidential Enquiries into Maternal and Perinatal Health and research into immigration and charging for maternity care. The author draws on national and international public health policy to explore the midwife's obligation to advocate for vulnerable clients and explores how undocumented migrants' access to healthcare and their ability to make informed choices about maternity care could be improved.
