Abstract
The authors attempt to analyze the drug use of immigrant Maghrebin youths in Paris and adjacent regions. After having described the general context in which the 'branding' of this 'social group' operates, the authors examine, through real life stories involving drug consumption process of many of the young people. Their story is strongly marked by their parents' migration: the parents' adoptive country becomes their children's birthplace. This particular situation enhances social processes, notably the sense of identity which characterizes their existence. However, this study shows that these young people are not the only ones to consume drugs; on the contrary, it is common to a whole generation of teenagers which calls itself an 'international ethnic group'. It is not a matter of elaborating specific methods which could isolate these young children of immigration but rather of questioning ourselves on the place and the recognition given to others in society.
