Abstract

This Act does the following, among other things: 1) provides for the penalty of caning with not less than 3 strokes in situations where persons illegally enter Singapore or fail to leave Singapore after the cancellation of a permit or certificate; 2) provides that the occupier of premises or a place where a person who has entered or remained illegally in Singapore is found with tools or implements or engaged in an activity that gives rise to the inference of work shall be presumed, until the contrary is proved, to have employed that person knowing of that person's illegal acts; and 3) criminalizes the act of occupying, owning, or leasing a place while knowing that persons employed there have illegally entered or remained in Singapore, and sets penalties for this crime at imprisonment for not less than 6 months and not more than 2 years and liability to a fine not exceeding $6000.
