Law-Ordinance No. 19/1989 on the legal position of persons recognized as refugees, 28 September 1989. (Article)
Abstract
This Law-Ordinance provides that persons recognized as refugees are to be treated as Hungarian citizens with the following exceptions: 1) they may not vote, 2) they may not be employed in jobs for which the possession of Hungarian citizenship is a legal requirement; and 3) they are not liable for military duty. In addition, these persons will be issued a bilingual travel document upon their request according to the Convention on the Status of Refugees; their recognition as refugees must be taken into consideration as a special circumstance when they apply or reapply for naturalization; and they are entitled to participate in free Hungarian language courses.
