Abstract

This paper focuses on the unique counselling needs of immigrant women. In order to understand the psychological difficulties of immigrant women and provide appropriate counselling services, it is important to examine the socio-politico- economic conditions under which they live. The post immigration life situations of the women are presented and a description is offered of the kinds of somatic and psychological difficulties they experience. It is argued that traditional counselling approaches do not meet the needs of immigrant women. This paper concludes with the presentation of a feminist approach to counselling (therapy) as a possible alternative. The role of therapist is re-evaluated within the context of this discussion. © 1989, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. All rights reserved.
