Abstract

This article addresses the health problems of migrant preschoolers by reviewing and evaluating the existing literature. Frequently cited health problems are malnutrition, infectious diseases, dental caries, and immunization status. By and large, the literature does not address pesticide exposure or accidents as health problems for this population. Some sources support quality day care as having a positive influence on some aspects of health of migrant children. The migrant population is part of a larger, complex community structure. Assessing the special needs of the migrant preschooler, identifying the available resources, and meeting those needs in a culturally sensitive way are a few of the many challenges that this population presents to the community health nurse. © 1988, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
