Abstract

In the psychotherapeutic treatment of migrant families from family-oriented societies, cultural identity and the role of the family are of particular significance. Due to biographical differences the family-oriented notions of the first generation differ from those of the second and third generations in terms of the degree of cultural identity and affiliations to traditional values. Alongside generational and cultural conflicts, language barriers, differences in the understanding of illness and ways of coming to terms with it are further factors complicating psychotherapeutic treatment for this group. A systemic perspective involving systematic inclusion of the family in treatment and the exploitation of family-oriented and cultural resources is a major asset for appropriate therapy design.
