Abstract

An epidemiological study was done on a group of 181 South-East Asian refugees admitted to the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital with a diagnosis of active tuberculosis. The mycobacteriological profile, the degree of intestinal parasitic infestation as well as the percentage of carriers of the surface antigen of hepatitis B virus (HBs-Ag) were studied in this group of patients. The results show that 10 out of 181 patients, (5,4%) had positive culture for Mycobacterium tuberculosis from their sputum. Out of 166 patients in whom stools were examined for the presence of parasitic cysts and eggs, 65 (39,2%) of them were positive. Thirty-two patients out of 167 (19.2%) were carriers of the surface antigen of hepatitis B virus. The authors compare their results with those previously reported for the same type of refugees who have immigrated to other provinces of Canada or to the United States.
