Abstract

Proportional mortality rates from diabetes have been tabulated from death certificates (1968-1972) for Chinese in New York City (N.Y.C.) and compared to white and nonwhite mortality data for 1970. N.Y.C. Chinese have a greater proportion of deaths due to diabetes than either N.Y.C. whites or nonwhites. Within the N.Y.C. Chinese population, foreign-born Chinese have a slightly greater proportion of deaths due to diabetes than U.S.-born Chinese. In addition, age-specific proportional mortality rates due to diabetes among foreign-born Chinese increase with increasing length of residence in N.Y.C.
