Abstract
The tasks of the public health service (PHS), which are regulated by the legislation of the Länder, are manifold, often related to the (eco-)system, and the spectrum of activities is wide. The function of personalized social compensation has always been integrated within many fields of activities of the PHS in a quest for social balance and fair health chances for all. This approach is further explained using examples from the medical and dental school service, municipal health promotion, .,early help", socio-psychiatric services and care for refugees. A further professionalization and development is expected from modern public health approaches such as health reporting and the current discussion concerning a mission statement for the PHS. © 2018 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston.
