Abstract

100 Kampuchean refugees in camp Khao-I-Dang, Thailand, were given a 6-month course of chemotherapy (Singapore trial) on account of open tuberculosis of the lungs. Treatment consisted of the supervised ,daily administration of rifampicin and isoniazid over a period of 6 months supplemented by pyrazinamide and streptomycin for 2 months. 76 of the 100 patients completed the 6-month course. 10 were transferred to a third country, 8 defaulted and 6 patients died. The bacteriological response was favourable in 73 of the 76 cases. Treatment was prolonged in three patients on account of doubts as to the interpretation of occasional positive bacteriological findings (2 cases) and because therapeutic failure was suspected (one case). Side-effects, although frequent, were generally mild and did not demand fundamental changes of the planned course of treatment.
