Abstract

The frequency of schistosomal polyposis coli is high in Egypt but low in Brazil and Surinam. In Egypt polyposis is mainly observed in male farmers, 20-40 years old. A case of schistosomal polyposis in a 61-year old migrant from Surinam with severe schistosomiasis mansoni is reported. Colonoscopy revealed a large ulcerating mass in the caecum and polyps in all part of the colon with the highest concentration in the sigmoid. Histological examination demonstrated the schistosomal origin of all lesions. A biopsy of the caecal mass showed a pair of adult worms in a venule of the mucosa. Treatment with niridazole resulted in clinical recovery. The patients also harboured Strongyloides stercoralis, Trichuris trichiuria and hookworm; these infections remained asymptomatic.
