Abstract

The author critically examines the view that the poor living conditions existing in many urban areas of Brazil are caused primarily by rural-urban migration. The process of industrialization is analyzed, and its relationship to the economically active population, migration, and migrant living conditions is considered. The analysis focuses on the metropolitan area of Recife in 1970. (summary in ENG)
