Abstract

Deals with the migration pattern of farmers in the Western Aude region of France between the censuses of 1954 and 1962. The results of the investigation provide insights into the relations between population and economic activity. The poor returns from agriculture resulted in owners of large farms ceasing their activities. Changes in agricultural technology, such as mechanization, the formation of co-operatives and the adoption of more intensive methods of cultivation do not appear to have had any influence on this. Those who cultivated holdings of average size appear to have adapted to the crisis rather better by producing more intensively and speculating in livestock, in spite of relatively poor returns. - from English summary
