Abstract

Examines the migration patterns of farmers in the W Aude region of France, classified by the characteristics of their farms between the censuses of 1954 and 1962. The information in these censuses was matched with that in the Census of Agriculture of 1955. During this period, the first half of which was marked by a severe local agricultural crisis caused by a combination of bad weather and a price freeze, two types of behaviour could be found. As the remuneration of both capital and labour was low, many large-scale arable farmers ceased production, and the older and smaller holdings came to be concentrated among fewer owners. The total area of farms of over 35 hectares declined between 1946 and 1959-60. Those who left were predominantly the youngest. Small farmers were forced to give up their activity in much the same proportion as the larger farmers, but those affected came mainly from the oldest age group.-English summary
