Abstract
Migration always entails a change in social environment and adjustment to unfamiliar surroundings. Andean migration additionally often entails a major change in physical environment when high-altitude natives move down to low altitude. This case study was conducted in the Tambo Valley of south coastal Peru, an arid environment with high density populations dependent upon intensive irrigated agriculture. Puno natives from highland southern Peru comprise 42% of a migrant population of 13 650. The study permitted comparisons between lowland migrants, highland migrants, lowland sedentes and highland sedentes. Analyses included socio-economic factors, and fertility, mortality, health, and nutritional characteristics of the various sub-populations.-from Authors
