Abstract
The massive influx of Indo-Chinese refugees to Canada since 1975 has caused epidemiologists to reflect on potential health hazards. This retrospective study was done at Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital in Montreal between December 1978 and September 1980. Sixty-five charts of hospitalized children were studied. Thirteen children who arrived directly on the Hai-Hong were the most ill, suffering from malnutrition and infectious disease. Of those arriving from refugee camps, most had infectious disease found in North-America. However, three cases of malaria, one of Dengue hemorrhagic fever and one case of active tuberculosis were identified. Many children harboured parasites and/or had positive PPD's. Lastly, australian antigen was positive in 2 children and 2 others had G6PD deficiency.
