Abstract
In 2015 and 2016 more than 1 million refugees sought asylum in Germany. The immigration of mainly Muslim asylum seekers poses challenges concerning integration for both the refugees and the host society. This applies all the more since the public and political debates about the welcoming culture has gradually changed to a discussion about the potential risk of refugees in the light of highly publicized crime and terrorist attacks. Crime committed by and among the new immigrants has attracted wide attention. By contrast, protests against and attacks on asylum seekers and refugee facilities have shifted into the background in the public perception. In addition to the development of immigration, the following article highlights crime recorded by the police committed by, among and against refugees. Using data from police crime statistics, criminal investigation department registry services and chronicles of xenophobic incidents, the most important offences committed by and offending groups among refugees, also in refugee facilities, as well as asylum seekers and refugees as victims of offences were analyzed in detail. © 2017, Springer-Verlag GmbH Deutschland.
