Abstract
This study is based on my field experience and adopts a feminist perspective to examine the discourse and practice of self-help groups of women migrants. By adopting a bottom-up empowerment approach, F institution (a pseudonym) combined practical and strategic gender needs. Since the former admit differences among female migrants, it incorporates family and children among the target groups of its services. Meanwhile, the latter imply commonality among female migrants, leading them to break out of the family, which is always regarded as a private sphere, and finally to resist the oppression and stigmas arising out of the social, cultural and political system, using the power of alliance. At an operational level, the organization adopted dialogue and praxis as its major action strategy. This article will discuss how and why it is important to promote the establishment of a collective group of female migrants. © 2017 Asian Center for Women's Studies, Ewha Womans University.
