Abstract
Aim of the study is to examine the difficulties in the psychotherapeutic work with refugees from the perspective of psychotherapists working in independent practice. Twenty problem-centred interviews were carried out across Germany with independent psychotherapists, and were analysed using the principles of Grounded Theory. A total of eight difficulties were identified: the living conditions of refugees in Germany (1), the funding of health care for refugees (2), cultural differences (3), the lack of professional networks (4), work with interpreters (5), listening to traumatic events (6), the current situation in the home country (7), the German health care system and the agency for employment (8). The findings complement results about barriers in psychotherapeutic work with refugees in international and national studies and point to problems that psychotherapists have to cope with, resulting in recommendations to facilitate the psychotherapeutic work with refugees. © 2017 Hogrefe.
