Abstract
The study of the sociolinguistic integration trajectories of Spanish-speaking immigrats in Spain highlights the importance of factors such as linguistic attitudes, prestige, cultural identity, or the imaginary of the receiving society. This paper focuses on the specific case of Spanish American women settled in Galicia through the analysis of 17 in-depth interviews. Particularly, the integration processes of the informants are contextualized by means of examining interview extracts which deal with a) their perceptions about the Spanish linguistic varieties in question, both their own and the Galician; b) their linguistic maintenance or shift; and c) particular cases of discrimination. The analysis of the distinctive features and difficulties that singularize the integration processes of this collective of immigrants emphasizes the arbitrariness of the myth of Spanish as 'a common language' and the necessity of a receiving society consistent with its diversity. © Universidad de Alcalá.
