Abstract

This paper aims at exploring the role of family in the educational and professional trajectories of Moroccan migrant children settled in the Autonomous community of Galicia, in Spain. The methodology included a qualitative and comparative method. Results remark that families' strategies have catapulted girls into higher educational trajectories in comparison to their brothers and to their peers left behind in Morocco. Their educational mobility goes hand in hand with their better labour insertion, although in lower qualification jobs. An ethno-stratified labor market and its gender discrimination mechanisms have contributed to limit greatly their social agency in a context of youth unemployment.
