Abstract
The expansion of extrafamilial early child care is driven, inter alia, by the character of the vulnerable parent of risk -Those with a migrant background or those who are socially disadvantaged. To optimize education within the family as well as in institutions, parents with a migrant background in particular are urged to make use of professional services. Here, families are promoted in their parenting roles, however, regardless of cultural differences with respect to concepts of parenthood and of structural inequalities. Parents with migrant background are under particular pressure to optimize parenthood and to position themselves in the context of doing and/or displaying family with 'good, well-performing parenthoodVThis entails negotiating partly conflicting expectations in institutional and familial, but also in local and transnational settings.
