Abstract

This article offers critical historical reflection on the filmic public information relations narratives used in the 1956 United Nations film Out, which advocated peace and international cooperation to care for refugees. I discuss the different filmic genres used to convey the UNHCR's desired transnational public information narrative in relation to the Hungarian refugee crisis in 1956. The article also addresses how the “problem” of refugees was visualized and solutions prescribed, in the hope that this analysis may be useful in guiding current communication projects relating to refugee matters. © 2018, © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
