Abstract
Based upon field research, the present paper aims at analyzing signs and landmarks which recent migrants leave in the urban scenery of Bourj Hammoud, which is considered as the "major market in Beirut" and has been housing for a decade migrants coming from Sri Lanka, Philippines, India, Ethiopia. They are often in an unregistered position, some of them work in the district, while others are employed in well-to-do Beirut families, women as maids, men in building, restaurants, hotels or small firms. Indian and Sri Lankan have also settled shops on the central street (jewellery or grocery shops, restaurants). Giving an account of 'newcomers' practices and how they use the district. These recent settlers live precariously, afraid of each check. However, it is in such daily uncertainty that a form of social life is taking place. Here migrant men - and moreover women - are actively working at bringing together the necessity of remaining unnoticed and steering clear, with meeting local national' people, those who claim to be Lebanese, Armenian, Lebanese Armenian.
