Abstract

In fertility treatment centres and medical practices in Germany the care for and treatment of migrants has become an every-day task. But due to communication problems or cultural differences there still are several barriers to optimal care. The objective of this literature review was to identify parameters related to gender and ethnicity as well as socio-cultural factors that may influence sterility and sterility therapy. A selective literature research for the period 1997-2007 including the databases PubMed, Medline and PsyMed yielded 14 relevant publications, the results will be summarized in 7 thematic units. In sterility treatment, infertility counselling and in research concerning reproductive medicine, culture-sensitive approaches need to be applied, to understand social and cultural differences and to adequately meet the needs of infertile patients with migration background.
