Settlement patterns and organizations among African immigrants in the United States (Article)

Abstract

The several factors that have contributed to the increased immigration, including the failure by African states to provide economic opportunities for their citizens and the prevalence of corrupt regimes, were focused in the study. One of the most important factors is the decision of where to live in the United States is was influenced by the level of economic opportunities available. Another factor that came into picture was the immigrant's desire to live with friends and family, so as to avoid hectic life without a high crime rates of the cities. The most attracted places these immigrants found are the regions of Atlanta, Chicago, Miami and Washington DC, where large number of African immigrants have opened their businesses as restaurants, grocery stores, hair salons, and night clubs as well. The African immigrants has also developed religious institutions to serve the spiritual needs of their members in United States, but still depend more on national organizations for their mere existence in the country.
