Abstract

Intimacy is a variable which presence in any interpersonal relationship predisposes an attitude of closeness and it gives a meaning to the relationship, or else, its absence induces a withdrawal and lack of emotional involvement. Intimacy is influenced by five areas of the interpersonal relationship: interactional, cognitive, emotional, sexual and communicational, however, it is also affected by the quality of the marital communication that exists within the relationship. To attain an intimate level of communication and an optimal and functional communication with the couple, it is necessary to employ strategies that converge in the solution of problems of daily life. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between marital communication, coping styles and the level of intimacy expressed by a sample of Mexican migrants that live in the United States. The results show a tendency to integrate as a couple from a functional intimacy, where the communication and coping strategies have an influence as strategies to solve the most urgent, emergent and day-to-day events; certainly, when solving the daily difficulties, the bond that supports the relationship is enhanced in terms of a strengthening of the unity, that is, the couple.
