Abstract
The phenomenal increase in immigration seen in Spain over the past few years has opened up the debate concerning the relationship between immigration and psychopathology. A large number of studies in Europe and North America have shown contradictory findings; it remains unclear if there is a direct relationship between immigration and psychopathology. Increasingly, a direct relationship between immigration and the appearance of a mental disorder is questioned, although it is recognized that the migratory process, culture and minority group membership impact mental health. Stress related to immigration, cultural difference, and perceived discrimination are recognized as risk factors. This article examines the relationship between psychopathology and immigration with a focus on acculturative stress and its moderating factors.
