Abstract

Background: Immigration poses problems that can have a considerable social impact as it often entails mental suffering and the risk of triggering psychopathological states in the vulnerable population. Immigration from East Europe, and from Ukraine above all, is an emerging reality whose importance is often underestimated. Indeed, there is a huge discrepancy between "official:statistical data (over 100,000 people) and real statistics (over one million), that prevents specialized services in Psychology and Transcultural Psychiatry from dealing with the already existing social, psychological and health problems. Aims of the study: This study was designed to assess the psychological and psycho-pathological features of immigrants from Ukraine, in regard to various contexts: pre-migratory and migratory, family and community, transcultural adaptation. Materials and methods: The study involved 30 Ukrainian working women. It was carried out by means of guided interviews divided into seven areas (personal data, work, physical health and somatics, immigration, family, communication-relational, emotional). The assessment was carried out with a systemic-relational approach. Results: The results indicate the current diffusion of a new kind of immigration - a "protracted stay:- involving complex psychological features unlike those of "traditional:immigrants. There is an analysis both of protective factors ofadaptation, of indicators of vulnerability, of resources of the local Ukrainian community and of intercommunity relational dynamics. An emphasis is put on the scarcity of local resources needed to handle the immigrants'problems and to set up a dedicated support network.
