Abstract

This paper contains transcripts and discussion of interviews carried out with the grandchildren of Polish Jews who emigrated to either France or Israel. The interviews show the way in which the grandchildren view their family's personal story and the way in which these stories were transmitted across generations. The interviews also show how the construction of their identity is linked to a family history, marked by exile and the Holocaust. A comparison between the interviews conducted in France and Israel permits questions to be raised about the impact of the political climate of the country of reception on the issues outlined above. © 2008 Elsevier Masson SAS.
