Abstract

Since 1995, and more completely since 1998, Italy has adopted a health legislation that guarantees for the whole migrant people, for whatever reason they are staying in the country," health protection, including not only medical treatment but also access to prevention programs. Nevertheless the access to the National Health System is still problematic for migrants and a social fragility impairs their health and prevention pathways. An indicator of such critical issue is the recourse to abortion: the percentage of abortions among foreign women is five time higher than among Italian women. Weak social policies regarding migrants, a common opposition to choices that can promote migrants' integration, organization of the health care system very diversified at regional/local level, not only influence health profile but make difficult all the actions that may prevent abortion among foreign women.
