Abstract

The Greek economic crisis has impacted the refugee crisis in the country. The two phenomena are linked in ways that highlight Greek relations with the rest of Europe and European relations with the Islamic world. The sheer scale of the crisis took Europe by surprise in 2015, but events in 2016 look far worse. Europe is at a historical crossroads and is having a terrible time deciding the way forward. Many European leaders are confusing the demands of compassion with migrant relocation policy and not thinking clearly about Greece's ability to play an independent role in resolving the crisis or about the interests of the other major nations involved.
