Abstract

The setting up of a 12-hour shift pattern in a care unit or institution is seen alternatively as a source of concern, a means of making savings in human resources or as offering more personal time. Presenting advantages and disadvantages, this type of organisation is certain to arouse debate. With a potential to have a negative impact on vigilance and the safety of care, the introduction of 12-hour shifts must be well thought-out, closely monitored and regularly questioned. © 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS.
