Abstract

In this paper the author focuses on some of the most problematic expressions of the complex phenomenon of contemporary migrations: Irregular migration, human smuggling and trafficking in human beings. The analysis is limited to the data and trends of irregular migration, human smuggling and human trafficking in the member countries of the European Union and in Italy between 2006 and 2017. From this analysis it is clear how the data related to irregular migration dispel every myth of invasion of unauthorized migrants)). The study, then, shows how, despite numerous attempts to clarify the terms of reference and the precise delimitation of migratory categories by experts, the European and Italian reality increasingly offer mixed scenarios, where it is very difficult to distinguish between migrants and refugees, smuggled migrants and victims of human trafficking. © 2018 Gregorian University Press.
