Abstract

Slavery is compared here with six other modes of human exploitation: community constraints, forced labour, clientele, indentured labour, peonage, wageearning. It is a question of measuring so its relative "utility" for elites having been in situation to take advantage of it. As a result, slavery seems to be a mixed system, on one side more polymorphous than systems like community constraints or indentured labour, but, on the other hand, less flexible than wage-earning; even if convergences appear to be able to come out with the last one.
