Abstract
Infectious diseases are intimately related to human migration and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) had a special role in history. Today the trade in human beings is closely linked to the risk of acquiring infectious diseases such as tuberculosis; STIs/HIV are particularly linked to trafficking in persons for sexual purposes. According to many organizations millions of people every year are involved in this ugly market. Actions in contrast with this phenomenon are possible thanks to the existing laws (especially in Italy there is the so-called art. 18, L.d. 286/98 which, between 2000 and 2006, gave assistance to over 11,000 victims). The medical staff can intervene effectively in these actions favouring a better and more flexible access to health services and establishing collaborative networks with social organizations working in the area.
