Abstract
The nature and causes of 'involuntary employment' with rickshaw pullers as a case in the city of Allahabad are explored in this paper. Small agricultural landholdings, unstable multiple occupations, and low incomes force people out from their roots to search for alternative jobs for enhancement of family income. For some of the rickshaw pullers, the job of rickshaw pulling becomes the major source of family income. Pulling rickshaws remains a choice under compulsion. Some measures for relief of rickshaw pullers are suggested at the end of the paper.
