Abstract

The recent trade agreement between China and the West has brought to the fore the growing importance of the social dimension of globalisation. It is important that developing countries do not concentrate entirely on exports but also develop a proper domestic market with the consequent improved living standards. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) is adding its voice to the concerns raised about forced labour and child labour in certain countries. SA 8000 (Social Accountability) certification is designed to ensure that a company's products are produced with respect to fundamental labour rights sanctioned by the ILO. The particular case of Cambodia is noted with reference to labour standards.
