Abstract

Investigators over the past few decades have been industrious in testing the relationship between drug use and crime, especially the possibility of cause-and-effect. The results have not been consistent and we are not well satisfied with the generalizations. Several recent studies have been designed with attention to theoretical grounding and have given us different views of the situation. These are more promising in that they provide a plausible context for the two forms of behavior, drug use and criminality. This is a strategy that should be followed in other theoretical directions as well, so that future policies and programs can represent the best understanding of these two troublesome phenomena.
