Abstract

This study explored self-categorization and acculturation attitudes amongst French youth of North African descent (n = 334) compared to those of Turkish descent (n = 158). Contrary to their peers of Turkish descent, the youth of North African descent clearly referred to ethnic self-categorization. These young people, whatever their origin, sex or age, refuse assimilation or communitarian attitudes and opt instead for integration. No link between the attitude toward integration and ethnic self-categorization has been found. However, the latter is positively correlated with a negative social representation of France. These results provide an empirical contribution to current theoretical and policy debates on the issue of the integration of youth of immigrant descent into French society. © 2012 Canadian Psychological Association.
