Abstract

Total occurrence and grade of risk factors for stroke were assessed in the population of displaced persons aged >40 years, accommodated in the refugee camps in Cepin and Rokovci. The study included 258 subjects, 192 women and 66 men. The presence of fifteen risk factors, previous symptoms of cerebral circulation disorders and history of stroke were recorded. According to this data, the risk for stroke was estimated using the risk scale. The results showed four or more risk factors to be present in all study subjects. The leading risk factors were arterial hypertension, stress, physical inactivity, obesity, age and, in a considerable number of cases, smoking and increased blood lipids. According to the risk grade calculated, 22% of the subjects were found to be at a low risk, 52% at a moderate risk, 24% at a high risk, and 1% at a very high risk for stroke. Measures of stroke prevention are proposed on the basis of the results obtained in the study.
