Abstract

This paper on Southern Africa shows that the Republic's newly-acquired democracy has placed a cloud of uncertainty over the future of neighbouring Lesotho which for decades had provided the Republic with a steady supply of mine workers. Within South Africa, the new government is under strong pressure to reduce the very high level of employment among black workers, and may well direct its attention to replacement of foreign workers in the mining industry. Migration and, it is argued, politics cannot be seen in isolation in today's transformation of South Africa. Rapidity of change in South Africa is also confirmed by data on the propensity of whites to emigrate to the 'traditional receivers'.
