Abstract

This is an analytical account of my experience as a political refugee. It covers a period of socialization in a different culture and explores the process of psychosocial transition into a state of refugeehood. I argue that in order to survive as a refugee, one has to acquire an identity that is alien to the self that made one become a political refugee. This is something that I did not do which meant that, although retaining my integrity, I had to pay a high price in other more personal terms. © 1995 Oxford University Press.
